Regensburg in winter

In winter, Regensburg turns into a fairy tale town. There is a lot to discover, and once the cold season approaches, one will certainly notice the special atmosphere radiating across the city. It’s fun to stroll through Regensburg in winter while having a mulled wine, or while enjoying a local delicacy like “Regensburger Würstl”. Regensburg is a very special experience in winter - not only during the advent season.

Winter activities

Skating in Regensburg has a long tradition. Already 200 years ago the Regensburg citizens ice-skated on the frozen river Danube. Today, however, you don’t have to wait until the rivers are freezed up.  Every winter, the “Donau-Arena” changes into an ice-sports centre and all the people who are interested in skating or ice hockey are more than welcome. Under the open white-blue bavarian sky, skating on the “Neupfarrplatz” is even more fun. Even those of you who want to swim outside on cold winter days will find an opportunity to do so at the “Westbad” where the outdoor swimming pool is heated up to 34° Celsius. Apart from that, as a tourist you are always welcome to make use of any of the indoor sports facilities in the city of Regensburg.

The markets and Christmas time

Regensburg is well known for its Christmas markets and one of the most beautiful markets is the “Christkindlmarkt” in the historic city centre. It’s been around for 400 years and you can choose from a wide selection of local delicacies like German Lebkuchen and “Zwetschgenmaennchen” or you can buy Christmas tree decorations and Christmas presents for your beloved ones.  The wonderful Christmas atmosphere can also be enjoyed in the castle courtyard of castle “Thurn und Taxis” or at the Christmas market at “Spitalgarten”.

Experience Regensburg over Christmas or New Year’s Eve! Our holiday flat is very close to the “Christkindlmarkt” and the historic centre of Regensburg. Another very beautiful Christmas market in Hexenagger can be reached by car easily from here.

Winter sports in Regensburg

Not for nothing Regensburg is called the gateway to the Bavarian Forest. The winter sports regions are only an estimated 45 minute car ride away.  In the Bavarian Forest National Park you can find a good choice of superbly groomed cross country trails through the beautiful countryside or you can try one of the downhill slopes at Arber Mountain on your ski or snowboard. The ski region Breitenberg is not only known for its ski jump but also for being an ideal starting point for snow shoe hiking tours and walks through the hibernal forest. Take a walk across the Winzerer Hoehen or go sledging down the hillsides in Bischofsmais.

Regensburg is charmingly beautiful in winter and has a lot to offer!
